Job Overview:As a Theatre Nurse you will assist the Surgeon and Anaesthetist in the Operating Room (OR), supervising the Theatre Technicians and managing Post Anesthesia Unit Care (PACU).

Duties and Responsibilities:1. Maintaining the Theatre lista) Correctly book patients for surgical proceduresb) Ensure surgeon/anaesthetist are informed of bookings or changes in timec) Advise the wards/patient of the scheduled procedure time2. Receiving Patientsa) Creates a rapport, receives, reassures and settles patients in theatreb) Communicate politely and appropriately to the patient & family membersc) Checks completeness of theatre checklist and acts appropriatelyd) Commences WHO checkliste) Carry out a Pre-Operative Assessmentf) Appropriately explain the nature of the procedure/operation to the patientg) Effectively assess patienth) Ensure all X-rays, Scans, Investigations and Bloods are availablei) Obtains correct consent for operations and general anaesthesia for day casesj) Prepares and avails patient in time for operation with all reports for day cases3. Operating Room Managementa) Hands equipment, as requested, to the surgeon during a procedureb) Accounting for all the pieces of equipment, especially after the operation.c) Getting and opening packs requiredd) Ensures that the packs remain sterile and that the operating room environment is contamination freee) Identify omissions/mistakes and communicates immediatelyf) Ensures calm and order during the operationg) Effectively assists the anaesthetists as instructed or as required4. Post-Operationa) Accurately assess patient after operation, documents clinical observations & findingsb) Consults and advises surgeon/anaesthetist immediately if abnormalities are notedc) Ensures clear airway and proper patient positioningd) Effectively hands over the patient to recovery/ward nursee) Appropriately assess patients on day cases admissions and discharge them5. Dealing with Patientsa) Ensure patients’ needs are met promptly. Oversee transfers to and from theatre to wardb) Ensure patient safety in a clean and tidy environmentc) Accurately takes and records vitals and theatre notesd) Interpret and immediately reports abnormality to doctorse) Ensures I.V fluids and blood transfusion are run in time, notes reaction, records and reportsf) Ensures all specimens are shown to the patient and taken to the lab within 24 hours post operation6. Drug Administrationa) Ensure all required drugs/supplies are availableb) Adhere to the 10 rights of drug administration (right patient, medication, dosage, route, time, documentation, client education, assessment, evaluation and client refusal of treatment)c) c. Submit all new drug orders to pharmacy promptly and STAT doses given within 30 minutesd) Keep D.D.A. drugs safe and drug register properly per unit requirementse) Refund all unused drugs immediatelyf) All verbal prescriptions should be signed within 24 hours by the respective doctor per the hospital policy.g) Ensure all treatment sheets have patients biodata including information on drug allergiesh) Records and accurately maintain the patient’s charge sheet7. Ensures all the items used by patients are billed accurately8. Ensures crash cart and emergency equipment are checked as required by the hospital standards9. Equipmenta) Ensures that the Operating Room is well stocked with the required surgical instrumentsb) Keep regular inventory of equipmentc) Keep all necessary packs and instruments organized for easy use during each procedured) Ensure repair/replacement of equipment is done promptlye) Reporting of faulty equipment promptly to the Nurse In-Charge10.Infection - Controla) Ensure proper disposal of medical wasteb) Ensure medical equipment are disinfected before next usec) Ensure proper disinfectants are usedd) Ensure that the theatre technicians and assistants understand and practice proper methods of infection controle) Ensure proper cleaning and disinfection of the theatres after every proceduref) Maintain and enforce infection control standards per the hospital manual and observe the infection control bundles (SSI, VAP, CAUTI and CLABSI) where applicable.11.Educationa) Participate in teaching & assessing theatre assistants and techniciansb) Participate in continuous nurses/medical education12.Emergency & Disaster Managementa) Liaise with the Nursing Services Manager to marshal hospital resources and staff in the event of mass casualties.13.Ensure that TWH corporate governance policies are adhered to.a) Prevent, detect and report any fraud or criminal activityb) Liaise with the Nurse in charge to fully implement internal audit recommendations and attain satisfactory ratings in subsequent audits.14.Record all sentinel incidents/events and report within 24 hours using the provided tools15.Ensure patients safety following the 6 International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs) (patient identification, effective communication, safety of high alert medication, ensure correct site procedure and surgery, reduce the risk of healthcare associated infections, reduce the risk of patient harm resulting from falls)16.Provide patient and family education/teaching applicable to the patients medical condition. Discusses patients concerns and answer questions relevant to care.17.Supervise Theatre Assistants and Technicians as per their job description18.Active participation in handover reports from the outgoing nurse on shift19.Ensure recording and safe keeping of patient’s valuables20.Proper documentation of patient notes and review; consulting with fellow clinicians, consultants when need be.21.Ensure that all diagnostic requests (lab and radiology) have patient’s clinical information. Prioritization of patient needs in a documented nursing care plan.22.Organize emergency trolley for easy use during resuscitation, drugs and supplies. Ensure they are well stocked, damaged equipment is removed and reported promptly. A checklist should be kept and updated on the 1st and 16th of every month, and as needed.23.Update doctors/consultants on patient’s progress and any critical values as soon as they are available24.Perform all invasive procedures under aseptic technique25.Enter unit specific data daily and promptly26.Ensure all the relevant consultants have explained procedures and have obtained consent27.Complete official checklists for all patients prior to procedures (theatre, radiology, renal)28.Ensure patient privacy and confidentiality is maintained at all times, as per policy.29.Participate in emergency response30.Client satisfaction (patient, consultants and others)- ensure client satisfaction through optimal quality of care, effective communication, timely feedback and escalation of unresolved issues to the incharge and demonstrate follow-up and improvement.31.Adhere to Government and respective professional standards of care and treatment of patients as guided by the Nursing Council of Kenya.32.Read, understand and be conversant with all TWH systems, policies and procedures especially policies pertaining to provision of medical services i.e. Admission & discharge procedures, nurses’ reports, theatre equipment and supplies, emergency protocols, operating room, theatre reports etc33.Maintain client/patient privacy and confidentiality at all times 34.Assist/Support General nursing duties when required 35.Any other duty as assigned by the supervisor in line with the job description.

Requirements and skills:· Diploma in Community Health Nursing (KRCHN)/ Higher Diploma in Perioperative Nursing· Certification in BLS or ACLS· At least 4 years experience· Quality nursing care skills· Ability to do accurate and complete documentation· Superior customer care service· Customer focus· Good organization skills· Team-player· Attention to details· Good communication skills· Very reliable
